During this time of year, we encourage everyone to consider black owned businesses for some or all of your Christmas shopping. We realize that it may be new to some of you. #BuyBlack is a trending topic. Congrats if you’ve already started spending your dollars in the black community. If you’re hesitant and need some help, here are a few tips and guidelines to get your started.

Start with online businesses
There’s a huge selection of black-owned online businesses. Sites like We Buy Black give you direct access to products, very similar to a black-owned version of Amazon. Peruse these sites and search our directory for additional online businesses.

Start by replacing items that you already purchase
Here at IABB, we call this a Black Biz Swap. We all have fixed expenses, and adding new expenses to our budget is not ideal. Typically, when we think about supporting a black-owned business, we become anxious of incurring additional cost, especially if we’re trying a business for the first time.  You can alleviate that anxiety, by experimenting with small purchases of $10 – $20 dollars once a month.

Replace common items that you already purchase. Food, personal hygiene, and clothing are low hanging fruit. The objective is to create long term engagement with the business.

Use social media to de-mystify the businesses
Most small black owned businesses are very active on social media. Businesses use social media to market products and interact with customers.  You can learn more about a business through their social media pages than visiting their website, in some cases.

Our site contains social media links for the businesses (where applicable). Instagram, specifically, is used by several businesses that sell products like clothing and jewelry. In some cases, you can purchase products directly from the Instagram posts.

Refer the businesses that you support
After a great experience at a black-owned business, spread the word. Share by word of mouth and social media. Most people are more likely to support a business if it’s through a referral from a close friend. One referral can go a long way. It’s a small gesture. I suggest quickly posting on social medial while you’re engaged with the business, or shortly after so that your enthusiasm is fresh.
